Jenn Five/NME Photo: Jenn Five/NME NME News Desk, 28th April 2016 Deftones’s lead vocalist Chino Moreno has formed a new group.
Saudade is comprised of Dr. Know of Bad Brains, jazz keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Mackie Jayson (Bad Brains, Cro-Mags), and Chuck Doom, of Moreno's project Crosses.
The new band have released their debut track, also titled ‘Saudade’, and an accompanying music video via a BitTorrent bundle. Both can be downloaded for free, the latter requiring an email address.
Earlier this year, Deftones released their eighth studio album, ‘Gore’. The album was the band's first since the death of bass player Chi Cheng in 2013.
Guitarist Stephen Carpenter has said that the record caused creative tensions within the band.
"As you may or may not have heard, I had some trouble liking some stuff [on the new album] in the beginning," he told Rolling Stone. "I've been down with too many frowns."
'Hearts/ Wires' was Carpenter's biggest issue, with the guitarist saying "That song made me think of Wild Bill the whole time – psycho killer and shit. I just didn't feel it. I had to embrace my inner psycho rapist and come up with the part and get into it."
Deftones will play a gig at London's Wembley Arena in June, a date originally scheduled to take place last year but which was postponed following the Paris attacks in November.
The Wembley gig will take place on June 3. This falls directly before the band appear at this year's Download Festival. Video: Deftones – 'Swerve City' (Exclusive Live In Manchester)
