Listen to Charli XCX cover The Stooges' 'No Fun'
Recording features on soundtrack of HBO show ‘Vinyl’
Andy Ford/NME Rob McCallum, 15th April 2016 Charli XCX has recorded a cover of The Stooges 1969 track ‘No Fun’, for the soundtrack of HBO series Vinyl. Listen to it below.
The soundtrack to the show, which was created by Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger, Rich Cohen and Terence Winter, features a number of The Stooges’ tracks alongside material from Julian Casablancas, Royal Blood and Elvis Costello. Stooges’ man Iggy Pop also recorded psychedelic track ‘I Dig Your Mind’ for it.
Speaking about Charli XCX’s cover, Vinyl’s music supervisor Randall Poster told NME: “Charli was really up for doing the Iggy track. She came straight off the plane, right into the studio and absolutely nailed ‘No Fun’, and that’s not easy to do.
“For all the tracks, we worked with our New York house band that was led by Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth),” he added. “A lot of other artists respect and are eager to work with him, so that helped a lot.”
It was revealed that Vinyl has hired a new showrunner to oversee a "change in creative direction" earlier this month (April). Season one of the HBO series was steered by Terence Winter, who previously worked with Scorsese on Boardwalk Empire, but season two will be guided by The Bourne Ultimatum screenwriter Scott Z. Burns.
The first season of Vinyl comes to an end at 9pm Sunday on Sky Atlantic. Video: Vinyl Premiere 2016: P.J. Byrne, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen & More Talk About Working With Jagger & Scorsese
