Margo Price joins the Nashville string band in playing "Purple Rain" during a show in Alabama

Old Crow Medicine Show performed "Purple Rain" to honor Prince at a show in Alabama.

What you expect to hear at an Old Crow Medicine Show concert: an audience enthusiastically chanting the words to their seminal hit "Wagon Wheel." What you also heard at their show last night in Huntsville, Alabama: the band, with plenty of help from opening act Margo Price and the enthusiastic crowd, belting out the chorus to Prince's "Purple Rain."

Showing just how vast the breadth of Prince's influence indeed is, Old Crow's fiddling frontman Ketch Secor led the band, along with Price on background vocals and tambourine, through an emotionally raucous old-time rendition of "Purple Rain," the evening after the legend passed away at 57.

Price foreshadowed the tribute on Twitter yesterday, shortly after the news of Prince's death was made public. "Damn 2016. So many icons gone. Prince left us far too soon," she wrote. "Gonna spin his records all the way to Huntsville, Alabama today."

Old Crow Medicine Show and Price continue their tour tonight with the first of two shows at the Georgia Theater in Athens, Georgia. Next month, Old Crow will once again cover an iconic artist's work with two special performances of Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde, on May 12th and 13th, at Nashville's Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
